~ Faith

[F]aith is not the fruit of intellectual search, or of Pascal's 'betting'. It is not a reasonable solution to the frustrations and anxieties of life. It does not arise out of a 'lack' of something, but ultimately it comes out of fullness, love, and joy. ... It is the only possible response to the divine invitation to live and to receive abundant life.

Fr. Alexander Schmemann
For the Life of the World, p.38

~ Faith

Yea so much power hath faith, that not the believer only is saved, but some have been saved by others believing. The paralytic in Capernaum was not a believer, but they believed who brought him, and let him down through the tiles?: for the sick man?s soul shared the sickness of his body. And think not that I accuse him without cause: the Gospel itself says, when Jesus saw, not his faith, but their faith, He saith to the sick of the palsy, Arise?! The bearers believed, and the sick of the palsy enjoyed the blessing of the cure.

Catechetical Lectures. Lecture V

~ Faith

But there is a second kind of faith, which is bestowed by Christ as a gift of grace. For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit: to another faith, by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing?. This faith then which is given of grace from the Spirit is not merely doctrinal, but also worketh things above man?s power. For whosoever hath this faith, shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove?. For whenever any one shall say this in faith, believing that it cometh to pass, and shall not doubt in his heart, then receiveth he the grace.

~ Do not despair

So do not despair in any way, ignoring God?s help, for He can do whatever He wishes. On the contrary, place your hope in Him and He will do one of these things: either through trials or temptations, or in some other way which He alone knows, He will bring about your restoration; or He will accept your patient endurance and humility in the place of works; or because of your hope He will act lovingly towards you in some other way of which you are not aware, and so will save your shackled soul. Only do not abandon your Physician, for otherwise you will suffer senselessly the twofold death because you do not know the hidden ways of God.

St. Peter of Damascus
Philokalia, Volume 3

~ Love of GOd

The soul that is in all things devoted to the will of God rests quiet in Him, for she knows of experience and from the Holy Scriptures that the Lord loves us much and watches over our souls, quickening all things by His grace in peace and love.

St. Silouan
The Wisdom of Mount Athos

~ Zeal

I have intentionally directed your attention to this zeal, so that you become zealous. For once it is part of us, then Divine grace for its part will not omit doing everything with abundance. Thus, when there exists such zeal in the realm of faith and the search for salvation, then everything exists, and the accomplishing of our salvation is undoubtedly in motion and heading towards its goal. When there is no zeal, then there is nothing at all; he who is not zealous for salvation is a non-participant in salvation.
